- Joint Mobilization/Manipulation: (click to learn more)
Joint Mobilization/Manipulation is a manual therapy technique comprised of a continuum of skilled passive movements to joints and/or related soft tissues that are applied at varying speeds and amplitudes, including a small amplitude/high velocity therapeutic movement to regain normal joint motion and function. Your therapist will select the most appropriate and safe technique following a thorough evaluation of the joint or area in question. Mobilization or manipulation can assist with proper scar formation, restoration of proper joint mobility and promote pain relief depending on the technique and treatment selected by your therapist.
- Therapeutic Exercise: (click to learn more)
Therapeutic Exercise is an exercise planned and performed to attain a specific physical benefit, such as maintenance of the range of motion, strengthening of muscles weakened by disease and injury, increased joint flexibility, or improved cardiovascular and respiratory function. Therapeutic exercise is a physical therapy intervention that can restore or improve musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary and/or neurologic function.
- Therapeutic Taping: (click to learn more)
Therapeutic Taping are techniques that use adhesive strapping tape as just one component of treatment of patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Therapeutic taping can be used in clinical practice to reduce strain on damaged tissue, provide mechanical support to facilitate correct movement patterns and postures, and facilitate or inhibit muscle activity.
- Gait Analysis: (click to learn more)
Gait Analysis is an important sign of health and disease. Gait analysis can be used to identify faulty movement patterns; which, if left untreated, can contribute to lower extremity and lower back dysfunction and pain. In higher level individuals Gait analysis of an athlete can help a coach or sports physician understand the relationship between the athlete's capabilities or impairments and the gait pattern, so as to enhance performance and reduce the risk of a sports injury.
- Gait Training: (click to learn more)
Gait Training may include instruction on proper use of assistive devices such as canes, walking aides and braces to assist reduce stress on healing tissues. In some instances, gait training with assistive devices may assist patients who suffer from balance disorders or those who have a history of falls.
- Ultrasound: (click to learn more)
Ultrasound is a mechanical vibration delivered through a soundhead at frequencies above the range of human hearing. It has been documented to assist with ligamentous and tendon healing, tissue flexibility, wound healing and pain. During the early phases of healing ultrasound causes a degranulation of mast cells resulting in the release of histamine. Histamine and other chemical mediators released from the mast cell are felt to play a role in attracting neutrophils and monocytes to the injured site. These and other events appear to accelerate the acute inflammatory phase and promote healing.
During later phases of healing ultrasound has been noted to affect fibroblasts and stimulate them to secrete collagen. Accelerate the process of wound contraction an increase tensile strength of the healing tissue. Connective tissue will elongate better if both heat and stretch are combined. Continuous ultrasound at higher therapeutic intensities provides an effective means of heating deeper tissue prior to stretching.
- Postural Reeducation: (click to learn more)
Postural Reeducation is the process of neuromuscular reeducation to restore "normal" postures with both static and dynamic activities to decrease abnormal repetitive or continuous strain on muscles, bones and joints that exceeds the tissues inherent ability to handle such strain. Postural reeducation can consist of proper instruction on sleep positions, sitting/standing postures and postural strategies with activities of daily living.
- Low Level Laser or Cold Laser Therapy: (click to learn more)
Low Level Laser or Cold Laser Therapy (LLLT) converts laser light energy into chemical energy which initiates a cascade of events at a cellular level. LLLT has been reported to assist tissue healing by increasing ATP and activating enzymes in targeted cells resulting in protein synthesis which causes a growth factor response and improved cell proliferation. LLLT may also assist with pain relief as a result of increased endorphin release. LLLT has been successfully used to treat acute and chronic pain reduction, repetitive use disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome, soft tissue strains and sprains, inflammation reduction, enhanced tissue wound healing, and cell regeneration.
- Electrical Stimulation: (click to learn more)
There are many different types of electrical stimulation. Depending on the type of electrical stimulation selected, the treatment may assist patients with pain, muscle strengthening and neuromuscular reduction for a variety of conditions such as lower back pain, tendon injuries, peripheral nerve lesions, and spinal cord injuries. By selecting the right type of electrical stimulation and placing electrodes on the skin in specific locations at a specific setting your physical therapist can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers for strengthening or neuromuscular reeducation to promote or inhibit muscle contraction or spasm depending on your condition. Another type of electrical stimulation commonly referred to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) assists with pain management. TENS uses low current that does not cause muscles to contract and may be useful for chronic back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, a sprained ankle, shingles, or a localized area of pain. If successful your therapist may issue a TENS for home use to be applied several times a day for 20 minutes to several hours, depending pain relief gained.
- Cold and Hot Therapy: (click to learn more)
Applying cold helps to numb tissues and relieve muscle spasms, acute low back pain, and acute inflammation. Cold may be applied using an ice bag, cold pack, or fluids (such as ethyl chloride) that cool by evaporation. Your therapist will limit the time and amount of cold exposure to avoid damaging tissues and reducing body temperature. Hot therapy increases blood flow and makes connective tissue more flexible. It temporarily decreases joint stiffness, pain, and muscle spasms. By assisting blood flow heat therapy may also help to reduce inflammation and the buildup of fluid in tissues (edema). Heat therapy is used to treat inflammation (including various forms of arthritis), muscle spasm, and injuries such as sprains and strains.
- Cardiovascular Conditioning: (click to learn more)
Cardiovascular Conditioning is critically important to the overall health and wellbeing of individuals. A properly functioning cardiovascular system assists with the delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to working muscles and healing tissues of the body. Often times inactivity following surgery, muscle or joint injury or various medical conditions compromises the overall cardiovascular health of an individual which can lead to secondary complications. When determined appropriate, your therapist will design a safe cardiovascular conditioning program while monitoring vitals to ensure a safe physiological response. In the case an abnormal response is found your therapist will communicate these findings to you and the appropriate medical specialist.
- Hand Rehabilitation: (click to learn more)
Hand rehabilitation is particularly complex requiring advanced study in the conditions that affect the hands and upper extremities. Axcess physical therapists work closely with treating hand specialists to customize programs specific to your needs. To restore pain-free function and activity, we'll establish a detailed treatment plan designed to improve range of motion, strength and sensation. We develop home exercise programs to enhance recovery of soft tissue, and we can offer static, dynamic, and static progressive splints to facilitate return to normal flexibility. Throughout your program we evaluate your progress for functional assessment of activities of daily living, and as always we keep the lines of communication active with your primary physician and specialists. Some of the most frustrating and persistent hand conditions can be improved. Treatment rooms and equipment at Axcess Physical Therapy offers some of the most advanced technology available.
